Intensive Outpatient Program for Addiction
What is an Intensive Outpatient Program?
An Intensive Outpatient Program is what it sounds like. The name is pretty descriptive, actually. It is the most intensive form of outpatient treatment for addiction. Clients participating in an IOP have the freedom to return to daily living while still receiving addiction care. IOP clients are only required to visit the treatment facility for scheduled therapy sessions. During therapy, coping skills are learned and motivation to stay sober is reinforced. Many patients in IOP will opt to stay in supportive recovery housing though. There are a few reasons for that.
One is, if you’re not local it’s much more practical and cost-effective than staying at the Holiday Inn Express. Another good reason is if you are local, or from California anyway, but the people, places and things where you usually live aren’t necessarily great for your recovery. We encourage you to be honest in your assessment of your own situation and needs and ask us for advice when deciding where to stay during IOP.
IOPs work best for individuals who have already completed some form of addiction treatment (like our excellent Partial Hospitalization Program, for example) and no longer require constant supervision. These programs are also effective in treating mild or short-term addictions. An important requirement of most IOPs is that the client lives in a place where they will not be around alcohol or drugs or people who use. This reduces the chances of experiencing triggers or relapse.
The Levels of Care at Transformations:
- Inpatient Medical Detox.
- Residential Addiction Treatment
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
- Outpatient Counseling (either in person or remote, usually 1x week)
Differences Between PHP and IOP
The main difference between our Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Program is the time spent in treatment each week. The Partial Hospitalization Program is still essentially full-time meaning they require 5 days a week at 6-8 hours per day. You can’t attend PHP and do much else, you’re still very much “in treatment”. An Intensive Outpatient Program is more like part-time and usually means no more than 15-20 hours per week spent in treatment. PHP is a higher level of care. Most people will start with Detox, move through to Residential, then PHP and finally IOP.
In some cases, patients might begin in IOP but it’s not super common. One case might be someone who had a substantial amount of clean time, has been through a full treatment program at least once before, but relapsed for a fairly brief period and needs to reinforce their recovery. No one is going to be hurt by “too much treatment” obviously, but maybe this person has family obligations or work that would make doing more than IOP now very hard and they have not relapsed for long enough to do severe damage. That’s one case example of someone who might start at IOP.
Similarities in PHP and IOP
Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Programs share many things in common. Both programs are outpatient, meaning the clients often live within a sober living home for the duration of treatment. Because PHPs and IOPs grant this freedom, both are considered useful step-down programs after inpatient residential treatment. Services offered through Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Programs are very similar. Individual and group therapy sessions are the main focus of these programs. The goal of each program is to prevent future relapse and establish healthy coping skills among clients.
Which Program is Right for You?
Lucky for you, we offer all of the above. You don’t need to choose between PHP or IOP. The best thing to do is start at the top. Give us a call. We’ll do a thorough phone evaluation and see what type of help you really need and we will work out a treatment plan that makes sense for you.
How Long is the Whole Transformations Care Program?
If you start at our medical detox, that usually adds about a week to the total length of stay, depending on what you’re using and how much detox you need. We suggest keeping an open mind and remember you can’t get “too much help” for a problem. No one ever went to addiction treatment and wished they had gotten less time and less therapy. But whole lot of people have decided to do detox only or even left against medical advice (AMA) and were sorry about it later.
Your insurance company also has some say in this, but part of our job is to go to bat with them for you and we are very good at that. We will make the case for continued treatment for you each week if we think it’s what’s best for you and you’ll benefit. We will always recommend a length of stay that meets your needs and fits your means. Ultimately the decision is up to you how long to stay (as long as your insurance is on board).
Some patients who begin at detox with us and stay with us through IOP and outpatient may get as many as 90 days of treatment all-in. Other people are closer to a month or a few weeks. Remember the length of stay in addiction treatment is one of the biggest factors in determining outcomes. Bottom line: People who stay in rehab longer and finish the program are proven to stay sober longer. That is a fact backed by clinical research. Remember that when weighing any decisions about how long you or your loved one should remain in addiction treatment. We just ask that you keep an open mind, weigh the facts and consider how your decision could affect your recovery and what it will mean to the people you love.
