Partial Hospitalization Program for Addiction
What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
This is a commonly asked question we hear. Most people who have looked for drug and alcohol treatment run into the phrase ‘Partial Hospitalization Program’ or PHP but so few really know what it means. So, we’ll explain. Basically, there’s an organization called the American Society of Addiction Medicine or ASAM for short. They set many of the standards (or criteria) used by addiction treatment programs in the United States. One of those standards is the Levels of Care. They are a system of designating how much treatment a patient receives and how long etc. It’s a way of standardizing care so that clinicians can treat patients in a uniform way and health insurance providers know what level of care a person is receiving at any given time. We don’t want to get into the weeds any further than that, but it’s probably more info than you’ll find on most other rehabs websites. Like said, we like to be direct and transparent here.
The Levels of Care at Transformations:
- Inpatient Medical Detox.
- Residential Addiction Treatment
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
- Outpatient Counseling (either in person or remote, usually 1x week)
OK, But What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
Right, back to what PHP is. Simply put, the Partial Hospitalization Program is the level of care that is one step down in intensity from Residential Inpatient Treatment. It usually features many of the same treatment methods, like individual and group therapy and other activities. The main difference is that clients no longer stay in a medical facility overnight. Most clients in a Partial Hospitalization Program will either live at home if they are local.
If they are from out of town or need to be away from people, places and things for a while, the popular choice is to live in supportive recovery housing. Also known as a sober house or sometimes halfway house (though halfway houses can be for parolees too which gets confusing, so we’ll stick with supportive recovery housing. So in a nutshell, our Partial Hospitalization Program includes many or most of the features of our residential addiction treatment, except there are a bit fewer hours of treatment per week overall (but still a full week’s work) and patients do not sleep in a clinical facility with 24-hour medical staff (but there are 24-hour non-clinical staff in the supportive sober houses we refer to)
Transformations Care Partial Hospitalization Program includes:
- Individual Psychotherapy (one-on-one)
- Group Therapy (primary process)
- Specialty Group Therapy (specific topics)
As Well as These Important Holistic Elements of Care:
- Music Therapy
- Art Therapy
- Therapeutic Yoga
- Trauma Therapy
- Animal Therapy
- Introduction to 12-Step Philosophy
- Fellowship Building Exercises
- Group Meals and Cookouts
Is a Partial Hospitalization Program Right for Me?
The next question most people have is: How do we know if a PHP is the right choice? The good news is you don’t have to figure this out on your own. As we mentioned earlier, partial hospitalization programs aren’t meant to be a standalone option. So, you generally don’t have to choose between a PHP or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), for example.
There are lots of decisions to make in choosing drug treatment, but that isn’t one of them. PHP is frequently a part of a comprehensive addiction treatment program. If you come to a complete rehab like Transformations Care that offers all the major levels of care, you don’t need to worry about it at all. You will begin treatment at the detox level (if needed) and then progress to residential and then to our partial hospitalization program when it’s clinically appropriate.
How Long is the Whole Transformations Care Program?
If you start at our medical detox, that usually adds about a week to the total length of stay, depending on what you’re using and how much detox you need. We suggest keeping an open mind and remember you can’t get “too much help” for a problem. No one ever went to addiction treatment and wished they had gotten less time and less therapy. But whole lot of people have decided to do detox only or even left against medical advice (AMA) and were sorry about it later. Your insurance company also has some say in this, but part of our job is to go to bat with them for you and we are very good at that. We will make the case for continued treatment for you each week if we think it’s what’s best for you and you’ll benefit. We will always recommend a length of stay that meets your needs and fits your means. Ultimately the decision is up to you how long to stay (as long as your insurance is on board).
Some patients who begin at detox with us and stay with us through IOP and outpatient may get as many as 90 days of treatment all-in. Other people are closer to a month or a few weeks. Remember the length of stay in addiction treatment is one of the biggest factors in determining outcomes. Bottom line: People who stay in rehab longer and finish the program are proven to stay sober longer. That is a fact backed by clinical research. Remember that when weighing any decisions about how long you or your loved one should remain in addiction treatment. We just ask that you keep an open mind, weigh the facts and consider how your decision could affect your recovery and what it will mean to the people you love.
