Advice for Family Members of Drug Addicts or Alcoholics

Advice For Family Members Of Drug Addicts Or Alcoholics

When dealing with a friend or family member who uses drugs, it’s often hard to know what to do. Ideally you would want to see them in a drug rehab program, but it can be hard to persuade them to get the help that they need. Maybe your loved one’s evasive and does not want to talk about their problems. They may even try to turn the script on you and blame you for things that cause them to use drugs and alcohol.

You should know it’s not your fault that they are struggling with addiction. And really it’s not their fault either, they’ve just found a way to treat something deeper and now they don’t know how to do it without the help of drugs and alcohol. So how can you help? How can you help yourself? Here are some pro tips for dealing with a family member that’s an addict or alcoholic.

Offer Help, Don’t Enable Your Loved One

It is possible to offer help while not enabling the behavior. The best thing that you can do is get your family member to open up about their drinking or drug use and make them see you are a safe space. You don’t want to come off as judgmental because then they will withdraw. You’ve got to listen to them and make them feel heard.

This can be a hard thing to do because you may want to offer them a couch to sleep on everytime they come crying to you. That only works for so long before it becomes tiresome. At this point you’re going to need to get them into an addiction treatment program that offers detox and residential options. It’s not healthy for you to deal with them detoxing and taking on the complete responsibility for their failed attempts every time. Not to mention, it can be mentally and emotionally draining, especially because you’re not a trained expert. To learn how to approach a loved one about addiction, click HERE.

Rehab That Offers Dual-Diagnosis Treatment

One of the best things you can do for your family member struggling with addiction, is to find a facility that offers a dual-diagnosis approach. A dual diagnosis is used for diagnosing addiction AND the underlying issues causing it, such as depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder and more. This is key for your loved one to get clean and prevent relapse.

Getting Clean & Sober For Good

Here at Transformations Care, our clients are top priority. We’re located in the South Bay, or Gardena CA if you’re not used to the local lingo. We offer a full continuum of care including detox, residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient programs.. Here we cut to the chase when dealing with addiction and get to the bottom of what’s really going on. Your loved one will not only get the support they need but the reality check that they have been putting off. We’re here to help them look at their past and teach them ways to confront it without using drugs or alcohol. We’ll help them get clean for good and teach them their worth as a human being. We’re giving them a second chance and helping them transform their life from the ground up.

Help Your Loved One Get Outpatient Treatment

After detox and residential treatment, don’t assume your loved one is now cured. Early recovery is a B*tch, and unfortunately can be delicate. Outpatient services such as PHP (partial hospitalization, IOP (intensive outpatient), and OP (outpatient) are “part-time” treatment programs, so your loved one can continue to work on themselves after graduating from a  residential addiction treatment program. One thing that we offer that not many other places do is a nighttime outpatient program. That means that if your loved one works a 9-5 job or is just normally a night owl we’re here for them when they need us most — during the quiet hours when it’s so easy to give in and use again. They’ll thank you for it later. If you have a family member or loved one that’s an addict or alcoholic, give us a call at 424.339.0965. We’re here to help.
