Am I A Functioning Alcoholic? Deciding To Get Sober

You have a nice car. A great house. A job that pays you enough to pay your bills. So, your drinking or using isn’t a problem, right? Wrong. For professionals and working people, deciding to get sober can be difficult when you haven’t hit rock bottom. Is detox or residential treatment for you if you haven’t lost your job, family, or freedom?

Are you a functioning alcoholic or do you need help?

First of all, there’s not really any such thing as a “functioning alcoholic.” You might think that you’re functioning well, but if you truly have a problem with drinking, then someone around you definitely has noticed. They’re just not telling you yet. If you’re skipping work or family functions, coming in late or smelling like alcohol, you’re walking a fine line and it could be just a matter of time until it all blows up. You’re not so much functioning as you are spiraling further and further downward.

How do you know when you’ve hit rock bottom?

In 12 Step meetings, people say, “The bottom is where you stop digging.” Rock bottom doesn’t have to mean losing your job, home, or family. For you, it might be something “less serious,” like having a huge fight with your best friend. Or, it might be something “worse” like going to jail or getting into a bad accident. The reality is that rock bottom is completely up to you. Your rock bottom moment is the moment when you decide to get clean and sober. The moment that you make that decision could be the worst moment that you ever have to live through. Everything can get better from that point on, if you want it to.

Do you really need detox or rehab?

If you’re ready to change your life, why not give yourself the best chance at succeeding? Instead of trying to quit on your own – which might take several tries to stick – you can choose to go to residential treatment and set yourself up for solid recovery. In residential treatment, you learn about the underlying causes of your addiction and begin to heal them. Professionals will give you tips on how to stay clean and sober for the long term.

If you need help, there’s no shame in asking for it. Alcoholism is a disease just like cancer, and taking time off from work or your other responsibilities is the best way to take care of it before it takes over your life.
